Dr. Stuart W. Maisel, of Amherst, an obstetrician and gynecologist, died Monday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a short illness. He was 71.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Bennett High School and Case Western Reserve University.
He earned his medical degree from the Medical School of Dijon, France, and served his internship in Hadassah Hospital, Tel Aviv, Israel.
He returned to Buffalo to do residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Millard Fillmore Hospital, and he maintained a practice in Amherst for nearly four decades.
He received many letters of tribute and expressions of thanks when he retired last December.
On two occasions, his deliveries made news.
In 1996, a baby girl made an unexpected arrival in his office when the mother stopped in to have her contractions timed.
In 1998, he delivered babies for three sisters on three successive days.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, the former Agi Lorinczy, and two daughters, Kimberly Maisel Sokol and Jordana L.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Temple Beth Zion, 805 Delaware Ave.
