Donald G. Hobel, a founding member of the board of directors of the Niagara Aerospace Museum, died Thursday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a short illness. He was 85.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Hobel graduated in 1946 from Burgard Vocational High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving a Purple Heart. He left the Army in 1952.
Mr. Hobel married Shirley Lutz in 1957, and they raised their family in Wheatfield.
Mr. Hobel was a mechanical engineer at Dunlop Tire Co. in Buffalo for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Niagara Soaring Club, Niagara Aerospace Museum and the Buffalo Aero Club.
He was active in local politics. He also enjoyed owning and driving several classic cars.
Mr. Hobel was inducted into the Niagara Frontier Aviation and Aerospace Hall of Fame and was a founding member of the board of directors of the Niagara Aerospace Museum.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a son, Kenneth and a daughter, Donna Carpenter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive at Hopkins Road, Amherst.
