A memorial service for Billey Fink, Ph.D., a retired Buffalo Public Schools psychologist, will be at 4 p.m. May 18 in Riverside Salem Church’s Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island.
Dr. Fink, who lived in the Buffalo area from 1955 to 2006, died Dec. 25, 2013, in Montclair, N.J. She was 87.
Born in New York City, she earned a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Florida, where she did groundbreaking work on the effects of radiation on the fetal development of mice. She later earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Fink worked as a bilingual psychologist for more than 20 years in the Buffalo Public Schools before retiring in the late 1970s.
During her time residing in Buffalo, she became active in many community groups that worked to promote social justice.
She was one of the founders of BUILD Halfway House and El Museo art gallery, and also volunteered with the Buffalo Food Co-op, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, the Jewish Center and Vive La Casa Refugee Center, among others.
She is survived by two sons, Micah and Elias Z.; a daughter, Mira; a brother, Joseph Weinstock; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
