NORTH TONAWANDA – The state Department of Environmental Conservation opened a 45-day public comment period Friday for the remediation of a brownfield at 600 River Road, North Tonawanda.

The 5.95-acre site has been targeted for an apartment and townhouse complex planned by Rock One Development, a Clarence development firm.

The location is the former Tonawanda Iron Works, originally Niagara Iron Works, which operated from 1886 to 1972. AJ Marine Construction, a retailer, operated there from 1988 until 2008. The only building standing on the site is a 2,940-square-foot metal warehouse.

The cleanup plan, developed by Rock One, calls for covering the old industrial site, which features buried heavy metals and hydrocarbons, with two feet of clean soil.
