A Buffalo man faces up to 40 years in prison after he was convicted of robbing a cab driver at gunpoint last year and possessing an unlicensed, loaded weapon this year.

Ramon Lopez, 19, of Woodward Avenue, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.

Lopez admitted taking the cab driver’s wallet and cellphone Nov. 22 while displaying what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun, prosecutors said. Police said he held the gun to the cabbie’s head at Parkside Avenue and Amherst Street.

While Lopez was free from custody in the robbery case, prosecutors said, he was arrested Feb. 11 after he was seen trespassing at an apartment complex. Police confronted him and found he had a 9 mm pistol.

He will be sentenced July 14 by Justice Penny M. Wolfgang.
