Summer hours for locks, bridges now in effect

Summer operating hours have begun on the state’s canal system the New York State Canal Corp. announced.

All of the Erie Canal except for 45 miles in eastern New York is open for traffic. Most of the other canals in the state also are open.

Most locks and lift bridges on the system will operate on request from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Sept. 10. However, some high-volume locks and lift bridges, including the locks in Lockport and the Exchange Street Lift Bridge in that city, will operate on request between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.

The lift bridges in Gasport, Middleport and Medina will operate on demand from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and on a scheduled basis from 6 to 10 p.m., the Canal Corp. said.

EPA sets rules to protect fish from cooling systems

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized standards last week that it said would protect billions of fish and other aquatic life from being pulled into cooling water systems at large power plants and factories.

The new rules, required by the Clean Water Act, establish “a common-sense framework” to mitigate the threat to fish, the EPA said.

Each year an estimated 2.1 billion fish, crabs and shrimp are “pinned against cooling water intake structures or being drawn into cooling water systems and affected by heat, chemicals or physical stress,” according to an EPA statement.

The rules govern plants that withdraw more than 2 million gallons of water daily and use 25 percent or more of it “exclusively for cooling purposes.” Facilities withdrawing even larger amounts of water – 125 millions gallons each day or more – will now be required “to help the permitting authority determine what site-specific entrainment mortality controls, if any, will be required,” including public input.
