LOCKPORT – A man who injured two nurses June 13 in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center was sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in state prison Wednesday by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr.
Rashaad R. Welch, 23, of Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, admitted March 19 to two counts of attempted second-degree assault. Assistant Public Defender Michael E. Benedict said the mental state of Welch, a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, seems to have improved during nearly a year in jail, which counts toward his sentence.
Niagara Falls police reported at the time of the incident that Welch, a patient under supervision at the hospital, attacked one nurse, punching her in the face and head, while throwing off another nurse who tried to stop him.
Welch was at first declared mentally incompetent to stand trial, but a second psychological exam in February reversed that opinion.
