NIAGARA FALLS – Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center on Wednesday dedicated its new 10-bed hospice unit named after a longtime hospital employee who died last spring after being diagnosed with cancer.
David’s Path, on the second floor of the Schoellkopf Health Center, was named after David Winker of the Town of Niagara, who worked on the hospital’s kitchen staff for 47 years.
“In a very real sense, the Memorial Medical Center family was David’s family. In the 47 years that he worked here, I don’t know that he ever missed a day until he became ill last year,” Memorial President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo said in a written statement. “David was one of those guys who everybody seemed to know and we all felt a very real sense of loss when we learned of his passing. Dedicating our new hospice unit for him is our way of saying how much he meant to us.”
