LOCKPORT – Robert L. Shimmel, a father of two and a second-time felon, was sentenced to the state prison system’s secure drug treatment facility Wednesday by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas.
“I think this is going to be good. I hope it’ll help you be a better father,” Farkas told Shimmel, 33, of South Avenue, Niagara Falls.
Shimmel, a marijuana and cocaine user, pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree burglary for his part in an Oct. 7 burglary attempt at an apartment on Lincoln Place in the Falls.
If Shimmel doesn’t succeed in the 90-day drug treatment program at Willard Correction Facility, he’ll serve 18 months to three years in a regular cell. His co-defendant in the burglary, Kyle D. Sullivan, 24, of Linwood Avenue in the Falls, was sentenced in June to a year in the County Jail.
