NIAGARA FALLS – A witness helped identify the driver in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday off Highland Avenue, police said.

Officers responding to the “A” building of the Jordan Gardens housing complex just after 5 a.m. discovered smoke pouring from the front end of a vehicle that had struck a tree. A witness told police she saw a man flee the scene on foot. Police then contacted the owner of the vehicle, who reported being at home with her boyfriend. Police said the boyfriend resembled the description given by the witness and was later identified by the woman.

Lonnie V. Richardson, 28, of Greenview Terrace was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to keep right, unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of an accident.
