WHEATFIELD – The Niagara County Republican Committee has formally endorsed the candidacies of North Tonawanda Mayor Robert G. Ortt for 62nd District state senator, Regina C. Cecconi for Lewiston town clerk and Donald E. Schildhauer for Town of Niagara supervisor.
Ortt was chosen by GOP insiders to replace Sen. George D. Maziarz when the latter announced after nominating petitions had been submitted that he wasn’t running for a 10th term. Some Maziarz staffers have been subpoenaed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York City, investigating allegations of corruption in state government.
Ortt faces a primary against Gia M. Arnold of Holley, with Democrat Johnny G. Destino awaiting the winner in November.
Cecconi has a Sept. 9 GOP primary against acting Lewiston clerk Donna R. Garfinkel, while Schildhauer has a November matchup against Democrat Lee S. Wallace in the Niagara supervisor race.
