Additional parking and alternative travel routes for tonight’s Tragically Hip concert should help alleviate some of the traffic issues that have plagued previous events at the outer harbor venue, promoters said Thursday.

Tonight’s concert as well as the Mac Miller show Sunday are expected to draw 16,000 people total, said Courtney McKenna of After Dark Entertainment.

Patrons heading north on Route 5 are encouraged to use the Outer Harbor Drive exit and will be directed north on Fuhrmann Boulevard to a new parking lot entrance. Patrons who wish to bypass the Skyway can take Michigan Avenue to Ohio Street to Fuhrmann, and follow the signs for parking.

For patrons traveling south on the Niagara Thruway to Route 5, the Outer Harbor Drive exit will be closed. Traffic will be directed to the Tifft Street exit and then north on Fuhrmann toward the venue. This will help alleviate the congestion on the Skyway from traffic backed up on Outer Harbor Drive.

In addition, a second parking lot to handle overflow vehicles has been designated on the site of the former NanoDynamics building on Fuhrmann. Shuttle service to and from the concert venue will be provided.

Water transportation to and from the concert will be provided by Pearl Street Grill and Brewery and the Spirit of Buffalo. It will depart from Canalside. Round-trip boat tickets are $15 and must be reserved by calling Brawlers Deli at the Pearl Street Grill, 939-3670.

Concert parking starts at 4 p.m., gates open at 6, and the shows start at 7.

Paddling concertgoers in kayaks and canoes are required to equip their craft with proper lighting, cautioned officials at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Buffalo.

“Too many people are showing up at waterside events in kayaks and canoes expecting to stay well past sunset, and without a light onboard, these paddle-driven vessels will be sent home prior to sunset,” said Petty Officer First Class Tom D’Amore.

Those who fail to comply with Coast Guard rules may be subject to civil penalties up to $6,500, according to D’Amore. In addition, a boater may be held accountable for costs of cleanup or reimbursement should it be found their actions led to a spill, damage, injury or loss of life.
