LOCKPORT – Main Street in front of Lockport City Hall remained closed today for the third consecutive day because of a break in a 101-year-old water main.

Norman D. Allen, director of engineering and public works, said it’s uncertain when the street can be reopened.

The 12-inch cast iron pipe broke about 3 a.m. Sunday, Allen said. A repair crew replaced a 14-foot-long section of the broken pipe with new PVC pipe, but when they turned the water back on, the next section of the original pipe ruptured.

After that portion was replaced, a third section on the east side of City Hall, leading to Canal Street, also gave way. That forced repairmen to dig a hole in the corner of the City Hall parking lot to find the newest leak.

Allen said no customer is without water service because of the breaks.
