LOCKPORT – Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said a Rite Aid employee called them for help Tuesday when he suspected one of his customers was being scammed by a caller who promised a Mercedes would appear in her driveway if she loaded money onto a prepaid credit card.
The Rite Aid employee said a 78-year-old woman was told by a caller that he was from Publisher’s Clearinghouse and instructed her to load up $500 on two prepaid Green Dot cards and the Mercedes would be parked in her driveway. The employee did not perform the transaction and contacted police.
Deputies went to the woman’s house on Aiken Road and noted that there was no Mercedes in the driveway. Investigators said the woman had been receiving 10 phone calls a day and said a computer check found that the number was notorious for scams originating in Jamaica.
