LOCKPORT – Representatives of the state Department of Taxation and Finance will be in Lockport on Monday to assist homeowners who still need to re-register for the basic STAR program, a school tax discount available on primary residences of families that earn less than $500,000 a year.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday in the county Auto Bureau at 111 Main St.
This year’s state budget included a provision ordering the one-time re-registration of all basic STAR recipients in an effort to eliminate fraud.
So far, more than 20 percent of Niagara County residents have not re-registered, and the deadline to do so is Dec. 31.
The basic STAR exemption typically leads to $500-$800 in school tax savings. Homeowners 65 and older and who are already enrolled in the enhanced STAR program do not need to re-register.
