LOCKPORT – Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas ordered a Lockport 17-year-old into the state prison system’s boot camp-style “shock incarceration” program Wednesday.

Farkas granted the Webb Street teenager youthful offender status, but that didn’t save him from state prison on his guilty plea to third-degree robbery for his role in the April 2 mugging and robbery of a Niagara Falls man outside a restaurant on Main Street in Lockport.

Defense attorney Ann Nichols suggested shock incarceration, and Farkas, who said she’d been considering it on her own, decided it might be the best way to get the 17-year-old, who’s currently in punitive segregation in the Niagara County Jail for making trouble there, to clean up his act. But the judge warned him that if he washes out of the boot camp, he’ll serve one to three years in a regular cell.

A co-defendant in the mugging, Demitrius R. Cole, 19, of Gooding Street, is awaiting sentencing.
