LOCKPORT – General Motors is asking the state Department of Environmental Conservation to combine brownfield cleanup work on three buildings at its Lockport plant into a single project.

The DEC announced this week it is taking public comments until June 20 on the request, pertaining to Buildings 7, 8 and 10 at the GM Components Holdings plant.

“It hasn’t changed the goals,” DEC spokesman Peter Constantakes said. “It’s a required administrative action to alert the public to the consolidation.” There were three separate files open regarding the cleanup. In March 2012, the DEC approved reports recommending cleanup of contaminated soils beneath the buildings, where assorted industrial chemicals were found in tests.
