LOCKPORT – The Common Council voted this week to hire a Niagara Falls company for emergency repairs of a major sanitary sewer main, a situation that may have been caused by a beaver dam built in the pipe.

The amount of work needed on the so-called Gulf Interceptor sewer in a deep gully off Niagara Street near the city’s western border is unknown, Alderman Patrick W. Schrader said. There are 1,000 feet of corrugated metal pipe between the nearest manholes, but it was unknown how much of the pipe would have to be replaced, so the price of the job is undetermined.

Schrader said it was noticed about two weeks ago that untreated sewage was leaking from the line into a tributary of Eighteen Mile Creek, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation has been demanding action.
