LOCKPORT – Plastic ducks are on sale for $5 each for the annual Lockport Duck Race, to be held during the Lowertown Canal Fest, set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 30. The race will occur at the Adam Street Bridge at about 2:30.
Proceeds from the race will benefit Camp Happiness of Niagara County, a one-week day camp for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities from Niagara County, offered at Camp Kenan on Lake Ontario. The camp is run by the Lockport Elks Club through a collaborative effort with the Lockport Family YMCA and Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara.
Ducks are for sale at several area events throughout the summer, including the Lockport Community Market, some of the Monday night car cruises in Ida Fritz Park, and at the Lockport Baseball Association’s Old Timers Game at Outwater Park on August 23. Ducks are also available at many area businesses and soon will be available trough the race website, lockportduckraces.com.
First prize in the race is a chest freezer and $200 in groceries, from Murphy Appliance and Niagara Produce Lockport. Other prizes include a family dinner and movie night, a $200 gas card, a 32-inch high-definition TV, and drawings for 40 or more consolation prizes.
There will be buskers on the banks along the canal between the Exchange Street and Adam Street bridges. Those interested in performing may contact the Niagara Art Trail at 609-0433. The day’s activities will be listed online as they become available.
