LOCKPORT – The Niagara County Board of Health is expected to write a letter opposing the expansion of the CWM Chemical Services hazardous waste landfill in Porter.
Although the board was unable to act at a meeting Thursday for lack of a quorum, Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton said the Health Department staff would be willing to draw up a letter of opposition for the board to approve.
CWM is seeking state permission to dig a new landfill on its property, where the current landfill is running out of space. A siting board appointed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo will make the decision on the project.
“It’s questionable whether it’s necessary,” Stapleton said of the CWM request. “Anything like this puts the public at risk.”
