PORTER – A fundraising “Concert in the Park,” sponsored by the Family and Friends Down Syndrome Association of Niagara County, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. next Sunday in Porter on the Lake, Dietz Road.
The day-long event is open to the public and includes a Krolick’s chicken barbecue dinner for $10 from 1 to 3 p.m. and live music by the bands Summer of’ ’69 and Universal Mind. Admission is free, but parking is $3.
There also will be a Sweet Treats ice cream truck, children’s games, dance lessons, bounce houses, a parachute pull, face painting, a petting zoo with the Lakeview Animal Sanctuary and a silent auction.
Advance tickets for the barbecue can be reserved by contacting Christine Sirianni at 870-4904 or Debbie Fleck at 870-1109.
Donations and volunteers are welcome. Information is available at dsaniagara.org
The event will raise money to offset costs parents must pay when they travel out of state to be alongside a child who needs medical treatment or surgery. It is also a chance for families and expectant parents to join together, provide support, raise awareness and celebrate the lives of their children who are living with Down Syndrome, said Sirianni, a parent advocate and president of the Family and Friends Down Syndrome Association of Niagara County.
Statistically, 40 to 50 percent of children born with Down Syndrome have a heart anomaly, and it is common that life saving surgery is needed out of state, said Sirianni, who is also a registered nurse.
“It is our belief that families who stay together heal together and we want to make that a possibility for the next child, mom and dad, by sponsoring this fundraising event,” she added.
