Sotomayor’s criticism of ruling was shocking

I take great exception to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s statement in The News on July 4: “Thinking one’s religious beliefs are substantially burdened – no matter how sincere or genuine that belief may be – does not make it so.”

What? This statement is so un-American that it astounds me! One’s sincere and genuine beliefs are protected by the U.S. Constitution, and not just religious beliefs. How is it possible that a Supreme Court justice doesn’t embrace this very foundation of freedom and separation of church and state? Neither she nor anyone else – especially the government – can define or declare as invalid what any individual’s sincere and genuine thinking is.
