Canalside doesn’t need another parking ramp
I recently read The News article about progress at Canalside, where a state official was quoted as saying there is “a big, big plan for parking” in the area. I thought: “More parking? This has to be a misprint.” But then Donn Esmonde’s column on July 11 addressed this very issue and mentioned that quote.
I visit a lot of downtown locations. Whether it’s Canalside, the Tralf, First Niagara Center, a Bisons game or any of the restaurants in the Chippewa District, I’ve never had more than a two- to five-minute walk! Specifically, when attending a free Thursday night concert at Canalside (with about 5,000 others), there are only about 50 cars each week parked on the first floor of the ramp connected to the FNC. That ramp has six levels!
I hope the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. board of directors and city leaders protect the remaining undeveloped real estate in the Canalside area that could serve the public with better alternatives than another parking ramp.
