CARLTON – A Holley man was rescued about 3:40 p.m. Monday after he struggled while swimming near his boat as it drifted away from him about a mile offshore in Lake Ontario.

Sean M. Bemont, 38, had been boating with his wife, Elena, 35, in the lake about a mile north of Wilson Road, Town of Carlton, when he decided to take a swim, according to the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office.

However, the boat began to drift away from Bemont as he swam toward it and he suffered a medical problem linked to his cardioverter defibrillator implant, deputies said.

His wife, who did not know how to operate the boat, called 911 and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Marine Unit rescued Bemont, who was not wearing a personal flotation device, deputies said. The Holley man was treated by a Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance crew at the state boat launch on Oak Orchard River.
