GENESEO – A last-minute $1 million donation has swollen the largest fundraising campaign in Geneseo State College history to more than $23 million.

Brooklyn real estate developer Greg O’Connell, a 1964 graduate, made the gift Friday evening during a celebration honoring college President Christopher C. Dahl, who is retiring next June after 18 years. The final total for the five-year campaign was announced during the program for Dahl.

In all, 12,900 Geneseo alumni contributed to the campaign, along with 7,100 additional donors, including parents, faculty, staff, students, corporations, foundations and friends of the college, campaign Chairman Frank Vafier reported.

Charles “Bud” VanArsdale, former president of the Bank of Castile, gave $2.5 million to endow the VanArsdale Chair in Entrepreneurship. A $1 million donor was Edward Pettinella, a 1973 graduate and head of Home Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust.

Funds from the campaign will support a variety of activities, including scholarships, student research projects, the athletic program, the library, and faculty and academic programs.
