Hamburg Central School District’s Health Science Academy will be launched next year with the first course for sophomores, Introduction to Health Careers.

Students will take medical terminology and ethics as juniors, and advanced level anatomy and physiology in their senior year. The district’s long standing emergency medical technician program also will be part of the new academy, which will offer field trips and internships in health-related fields to help students advance in the medical and health related fields.

“We see kids taking challenging courses that motivate and excite them about the careers out there,” said health teacher Sally Couzens.

Students can start signing up next semester, and the first class will graduate from the academy in 2017.

The Frontier School Board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Frontier Educational Center board room at 5120 Orchard Ave., Hamburg. an executive session will be held at 5 p.m., prior to hte regular board meeting.

Last week, the high school’s Languages Other Than English clubs held their annual international holiday celebration. At the event, students who participate in the language clubs fill the high school cafeteria with tables representing different countries and regions of the world.

At this year’s celebration, 14 countries and regions were represented – including Germany, Greece, Poland, Ireland, Australia, Asia, Denmark, Pakistan, Bosnia, Turkey, the Middle East, Italy, French and Spanish-speaking countries.

Blasdell got good news last week, with the award of $100,000 to assist owners of mixed-used buildings to complete residential renovation projects.

The funding from the state’s Main Street program will go through the Hamburg Development Corp. , and is the same program that was successfully used in the Village of Hamburg to rejuvenate its downtown area.

“This funding will be a significant boost to the Village of Blasdell, and will help with much needed renovations to many mixed-use buildings in the Village,” state Assemblyman Sean Ryan said.

• The Hamburg Village Board will conduct a work session at 5:30 p.m. Monday followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m. in Village Hall, 100 Main St.

• The Hamburg village Architectural Review Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Village Hall.

• The Blasdell Village Board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Village Hall, 121 Miriam Ave.

• The town Planning Board will conduct a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 7B in Town Hall, 6100 South Park Ave.
