There may be money left over from constructing quiet zones at the railroad crossings on Rogers and Cloverbank roads.

Town received $475,000 in federal highway funding and $50,000 in state funding for the project. A more expensive plan had been proposed, but the railroad changed its requirements. The current project would install devices that channel traffic, preventing cars from going around the gate that comes down at the crossing, directly on the pavement surface along the center of the road, 100 feet from each crossing gate arm. With the devices in place, trains would not have to blow their whistles at the crossings.

The town is looking into using the rest of the funding to establish additional quiet zones at other crossings in the town, such as Pleasant Avenue, and Lakeview and Bayview roads, Town Engineer Gerard M. Kapsiak said. Since Pleasant and Lakeview are county roads, the town has contacted Erie County to discuss installing the traffic devices on those roads, he said.

Copies of the draft design report and preliminary drawings are available at the town’s website at http://www.townofhamburgny.com/Important_Town_Documents-117736.html.
