Dawn Porter, a network television lawyer-turned-filmmaker, will be the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Commemoration Celebration in memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at 4 p.m. Jan. 30 in Swan Auditorium at Hilbert College, 5200 South Park Ave., Hamburg.

Her presentation, “Public Defenders: The Keepers of Civil Rights,” will be preceded by two screenings of her HBO documentary, “Gideon’s Army,” which follows public defenders in the Deep South, at 12:25 p.m. Jan. 28 and 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in 101 Bogel Hall.

A graduate of Swarthmore College and Georgetown University Law School, Porter was director of news standards and practices at ABC News and vice president of standards and practices at A&E Networks before beginning her film career.
