A proposal to establish a town police department on Grand Island will be up for a public hearing Tuesday night.

The Town Board would have primary oversight for the department’s operations and activities, and would appoint a police chief to handle day-to-day activities, according to a draft of the proposed local law. It hasn’t been determined whether the chief’s job would be full or part time.

State Police and deputies from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office currently patrol the island.

The hearing begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road.
