WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs on Friday completed its purchase of a 132-acre site in Pembroke that will be used for a new national veterans cemetery to serve the Buffalo and Rochester metro areas.

The VA said it paid $625,000 for the land, which is located at 1232 Indian Falls Road. The purchase came a day after Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., announced that the VA had settled on the Genesee County site for the cemetery.

The VA said it plans to award a contract for the cemetery master planning and design work later this year. That work typically takes up to two years, with construction lasting another two to two and a half years, although burials can generally begin 12 months into the construction process.

The first full phase of construction will include the development of cemetery roads, an entrance, administration and public information center, committal shelters and a maintenance facility.
