Byron-Bergen schools in Genesee County were evacuated Thursday morning after two small gas leaks were detected in the district’s elementary and junior/senior high schools, Superintendent Casey Kosiorek said.

Fire companies were called at about 9:15 a.m., and the district’s 1,050 students were evacuated from the buildings, Kosiorek said. No illness or symptoms were reported, he said. Classes were canceled Thursday along with extracurricular activities and sports.

Kosiorek said the small leaks were identified only because the gas company added an excess of odorant while working Wednesday on the district’s natural gas lines.

Kosiorek said the buildings are safe to enter, but the district continued to test them throughout the day Thursday before making a decision about whether classes will resume today.
