Two Texas brothers have been charged with evading more than $1.2 million in sales tax while operating seven gas stations in Erie County for more than four years.

Ilias Maredia, 51, and Latif Maredia, 48, both of Stafford, Texas, near Houston, pleaded not guilty last week in Erie County Court to first-degree grand larceny and nine counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing in connection with the theft from March 1, 2008 and May 31, 2012.

They were indicted May 28, were arrested June 4 in Texas and were arraigned last Friday before Judge Michael F. Pietruszka who set bail at $100,000.

They face a maximum prison terms of 12 to 36 years if convicted, according to District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.
