A former member of Operating Engineers Local 17 was sentenced Monday by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny to eight months in prison.
Michael J. Eddy, 45, of Gowanda, had previously pleaded guilty to extortion.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony M. Bruce said Eddy was part of a campaign designed to force Earth Tech, a Latham contractor, into signing a collective bargaining agreement with the union. Prosecutors said the threat of sabotage at the company’s work site in Buffalo forced Earth Tech to spend about $200,000 to secure the site.
Eddy was one of seven officers and members of Local 17 convicted in the case. Four others were acquitted at trial.
