The Food 2 Families food drive sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets set a record in 2013 with $172,206 collected from customers at its stores. The all-day food drive held Dec. 6 also brought in 116,503 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Western New York.
The record was a 48 percent increase over the amount of money given in 2012, according to the Food Bank. It will be used to help provide 958,117 meals to the hungry in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties in the coming year. Tops gave $50,000 to the campaign, and Patrick Kane, a Buffalo native and star player with the Chicago Black Hawks hockey team, donated $5,000 for cereal, a donation matched by General Mills.
Food 2 Families, held on Dec. 6, is sponsored by Tops, WGRZ-TV and Town Square Media.
The Food Bank distributes food to 340 member agencies in its service area to provide food for children, seniors, food pantries and soup kitchens.
