CHAUTAUQUA – Five teenage hikers missing in the Chautauqua Gorge were located early Wednesday and brought to safety, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities launched a multi-aqgency search late Tuesday and tracked down one of the hikers who had become separated from the group, about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office. The other hikers were stuck on a ledge about 30 feet above the bottom of the gorge and authorities decided to wait until daylight to attempt a rescue.

The others were rescued about 8:15 a.m. and no one was injured, authorities said. Three 17-year-old hikers are from Houston, St. Louis and Israel. Two 18-year-olds are from Woodmere, and Israel..

Joining the rescue were firefighters from Mayville, Westfield, Hartfield, Sherman and Portland. Also participating were Chautauqua County’s Emergency Services Department and New York State Forest Rangers.
