Eight teams and 48 children ages 15 and up competed in the inaugural Murder-Free Summer Basketball Tournament July 5 and 12 at Masten Park.

The winners, Team Healthy Buffalo, took home a $500 prize. Team Mobb placed second and Team The Cheeba Brothers third.

The 5-on-5 tournament was organized by the Stop The Violence Foundation, which seeks to prevent crime in the City of Buffalo and sponsors various activities for children. The foundation’s latest awareness-raising initiative is the Murder-Free Summer campaign.

“We’re trying to have a murder-free summer,” said Bishop Perry Davis, founder of Stop The Violence. “Right now we’ve had three murders, but it’s still only three. I’m trying to keep it at that number.”

He added, “Hopefully we’ll do [the tournament] every year from this point on and it will grow.”

The foundation will hold a Buffalo’s Got Talent competition July 26. Those interested in participating can call Davis at (716) 715-1375.
