BATAVIA – Two dozen water tankers from fire companies throughout Genesee County were put into service battling a fire that destroyed a major barn building on the Baskin Livestock business on Creek Road in the Town of Bethany Thursday evening.
The fire, which sent flames high into the sky, began about 11 p.m. in the building, one of the oldest on the site, which was used to produce hundreds of tons of feed regularly shipped out of the area.
The tankers had to be called in because a nearby hydrant was dry.
The fire was declared under control at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported.
The 33-year-old company, which began in Rhode Island and moved to the Batavia area in 1991, had all its cattle and horses in a different building on the 1,750-acre site, sparing them from possible injury.
No damage estimates were released.
The company, which had to deal with another fire at the business in 2008, employs 39 and is one of the largest agricultural businesses in Genesee County.
