Independent Living of Niagara County is hosting its ninth annual Bass Fishing Derby benefit on Aug. 3, the only fishing derby in the region open to persons with disabilities and all ages. The derby begins at 6:30 a.m. at Old Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, followed by an awards ceremony, family barbecue and basket auction at 1 p.m. at the Fin, Feather and Fur Conservation Society, 904 Swann Road, Lewiston. Make Lemon Aide Foundation for Cerebral Palsy will host “A Walk In Lauren’s Shoes” 3K Walk/Run and Family Fun Day at 10 a.m. today at Woodlawn Beach State Park on Lake Erie. Registration begins at 8 a.m.; family fun activities, food, drinks and live music, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will be required to wear ankle weights on each foot, designed to simulate to a minimum extent what it might feel like for someone with cerebral palsy.

Western New York Independent Living Inc. offers a self-defense awareness group, specifically designed for personal protection and confidence-building for people with disabilities, at noon Friday every Friday in its facility located at 3108 Main St. The group will provide options to being mistreated and abused, address scenarios to avoid, tackle and control confrontation in realistic situations. Modified martial art techniques will be demonstrated including Judo, jujitsu and aikido.
