Evans Police are continuing to investigate the high-speed car crash that took the life of a Lake Shore High School student over the weekend.

Richard Heferle, 18, of Derby, died Saturday afternoon after losing his control of his 2007 Lincoln MZD sedan, which according to police, was moving at a “very high rate of speed” along Sturgeon Point Road. Police said the car struck a mailbox and then two trees near Decker Road.

Investigators have learned that Heferle’s car was following another fast-moving car – driven by a close friend of Heferle’s – when the Heferle vehicle went out of control, Police Lt. Michael Masullo said.

Police do not know if the two drivers were racing on the road, which has a 40 miles per hour legal speed limit, the lieutenant said.

Police have not determined what caused Heferle to lose control, “but I am 100 percent certain in saying speed was a factor,” Masullo said.

No decision has been made whether to file any traffic charges against Heferle’s friend, he added. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Evans Police at 549-3600.
