Volunteers have planted beach grass to help stabilize the sand dune at Bennett Beach, as well as dogwood and willow trees to stabilize the bank of Big Sister Creek, as part of a restoration project.
“This restoration project is a tremendous way to care for and enhance Bennett Beach and the surrounding parkland,” County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. “Not only will this project help to create a more beautiful beach and park for all users, it will help to protect this natural asset into the future.”
Volunteers also removed invasive Japanese knotweed, planted wildflowers and installed bluebird boxes in a new low-mow area.
Other improvements at the beach include demolition of an old municipal bathhouse wall on the beach and improvements to the parking lot.
The project is a combined effort among the Erie County Parks Department, Alliance for the Great Lakes, HSBC Bank, the Erie County Soil and Water District, the Erie County Water Quality Committee and the Lake Erie Watershed Protection Alliance.
