High school juniors will compete to see who’s fastest at changing a car tire at the annual Tire Rodeo at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Erie Community College South Campus Vehicle Technology Training Center in Orchard Park. It will be held in conjunction with the Niagara Frontier Auto Dealers Association Ron Smith Memorial AutoTech Competition for high school seniors.

Juniors will be timed as they replace a damaged tire, then take a written tire safety test, with two seconds added to their time for each wrong answer.

“About 20 of our 60 automotive students wanted to compete in the Tire Rodeo this year, and we tested them until we got it down to the two fastest,” says Gary Willis, a teacher at Erie 1 BOCES Kenton Career and Technical Center in the Town of Tonawanda, whose students have won the competition a record seven times.
