A burglary at an East Ferry Street food store early Saturday turned destructive, when the thieves cut a lock, threw a large rock through the glass front door, cut the electricity and damaged the front counter.

Ferry-Fillmore District police responded shortly before 4:30 a.m. to the report of a burglary in progress at the Alawdi Food Market on East Ferry Street, just west of the Kensington Expressway.

Stolen were 20 cartons of Newport cigarettes, valued at $91 each; about $300 in rolled quarters; and a wallet.

Police followed a trail of quarters following the break-in.
