Twenty-two employees of a contractor that provides janitorial services to D’Youville College have unionized.
The workers, who are employed by ABM, are now represented by Service Employees International Union Local 200 United. Jake Allen, a union organizer, said an “overwhelming number” of the employees signed union cards, which the employer recognized, without requiring an election through the National Labor Relations Board.
Raising wages is the top concern among the new union members, Allen said. The union will now turn its attention to negotiating a first contract with ABM. SEIU Local 200 United represents 15,000 workers in upstate New York.
