Outdoor ice rinks under a tight construction timeline got a boost Friday when the City of Buffalo released a stop-work order.

Common Council members and the city’s Public Works and Law departments had questions about the project, which caused construction to be halted. But the Council approved the project Tuesday, and on Friday, the city allowed construction to proceed.

The Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 21 and 22 at Buffalo RiverWorks, 333 Ganson St., and all 120 teams have been selected, 66 of which are returning from the 2013 tournament.

The teams have seven-player rosters, and 800 players are expected.

The rinks are expected to be completed in time for the tournament, developer Doug Swift said Friday.

Some concrete work and buildout of a mechanical room took place Friday, and today, John W. Danforth Co. is expected to resume installation of refrigeration equipment for the rinks.

In addition to the refrigerated outdoor rinks, Buffalo RiverWorks will include a brewery, restaurant and performing arts space, which will be under construction later this year.
