The exterior of the Statler City hotel will get a $5.3 million face lift to restore its marquee, store front and the building’s terra cotta.
Mayor Byron W. Brown and Statler City developer and owner Mark Croce announced the start of the multi-phased restoration of the iconic downtown building this morning.
The money comes from a state grant.
The Statler had been in bankruptcy court and faced possible demolition before Croce bought the 18-story building on Niagara Square for $700,000 and back taxes in 2011.
Since then, he’s invested more than $3 million to renovate the Terrace Room, Grande Lobby, Lobby Bar and Palm Court Bar on the first floor, as well as the facility’s various ballrooms. It had its grand opening on New Year’s Eve 2011.
The new round of exterior restorations continues the landmark’s rebirth.
