The northernmost block of Washington Street will be closed to all but local traffic for three years, beginning on Friday, to accommodate construction of the University at Buffalo School of Medical and Biomedical Sciences between Washington and Main streets, atop the Allen Medical Campus subway station.

The sidewalk on the east side of Washington, between Carlton and High streets, will remain open, but the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus shuttle stop for the subway will move to the corner of Carlton and Washington.

Also, the Washington Street entrance for the subway station will close, and riders will have to use the Main Street entrance.

Bus service on that block also will be rerouted to Main Street, according to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.

LPCiminelli is doing the initial excavation and foundation work and will erect the framework for the eight-story building, which is scheduled to open in late 2016 and house 2,000 students, faculty and staff from UB.
