A 10-year-old girl from Depew has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from a national department store chain for her volunteer efforts in the community.
Brooke Dehn was among almost 200 winners, from more than 37,000 nominees nationwide, in Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. Winners were chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome.
Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of 10 national scholarships of $10,000, which will be announced at the end of July.
Passionate about recycling, Brooke started a used marker drive last November at her school, Cayuga Heights Elementary, where she placed collection bin in the lobby to collect dried-up markers. From there, the markers are sent to JBI Inc. in Niagara Falls to be converted into clean liquid fuel that can power vehicles, heat homes and cook meals.
