A record $1.2 million was wagered on Saturday’s Belmont Stakes at the local Off-Track Betting offices, OTB officials announced Monday.
Bolstered by the shot California Chrome had at capturing the first Triple Crown since 1978, the numbers shot up for the race this year, according to officials.
“California Chrome’s story certainly inspired an excitement not seen since Big Brown had a shot in 2008,” said Michael Kane, the CEO and president of the Western Regional OTB. “Hopefully, his story will generate more interest in the sport of horse racing.”
Saturday’s betting beat OTB’s previous record set in 2004 of $853,578.
TV ratings also showed Buffalo ranked eighth nationally among viewership in major cities.
