Huge traffic backups were reported today because of a repair job that shut down the southbound span of the south Grand Island Bridge.

Motorists trying to get onto Grand Island from the south were backed up more than a mile into the Town of Tonawanda, and motorists trying to leave the island on the south end were backed up more than two miles to Whitehaven Road, State Police reported at 2 p.m. today.

“The southbound bridge on the south end of Grand Island will be closed for repairs until 9 a.m. Sunday, so all traffic in both directions is being routed over the northbound bridge,” said a State Police sergeant. “There are going to be some severe delays.”
