Auction Direct USA, known for its “no-haggle” used-car pricing, has closed its Clarence store.

The company, based in the Rochester area, had expanded to the Transit Road location, just south of Klein and Roll roads, in 2011. The site was formerly home to a West Herr Automotive Group operation.

Auction Direct USA decided to consolidate its Western New York operations to its Victor location, outside of Rochester, said Michael Guerrein, director of marketing. Auction Direct also has stores in Jacksonville, Fla., and Raleigh, N.C.

About 30 employees worked at the Clarence store, and some of them were offered other jobs with the company, Guerrein said.

Guerrein was asked if the Clarence store’s location sales performance had lived up to company expectations. “In the long run, no,” he said, though he noted that sales were up from last year.

Auction Direct was founded in 2005 and draws its name from building its inventory through auctions. The company expanded into the Buffalo market about three years ago, eager to build on its success in the Rochester area. At the time, the company said it was already scouting sites for a second Buffalo-area location.

But the Buffalo area proved a “tough market for used-car sales,” Guerrein said. “You’ve got West Herr and some really established dealers.”

The company has not yet determined what it will do with the closed facility, he said.
